AirAsia is the latest airline in the Southeast and Eastern Asia region to embark on a program to deploy electric vertical take-off and landing aircraft.
The carrier has signed a deal with Avolon to lease at least 100 VX4 eVTOL aircraft, which it says will be used to provide "advanced air mobility" to passengers.
The idea is that AirAsia will use the aircraft to create ride-sharing services, hosted on the airline's so-called super app of products.
Avolon signed a similar deal with Japan Airlines in October last year.
Rival Japanese airline ANA struck an agreement with Joby earlier this week for the deployment of ride-sharing services between some of the country's airports and their respective downtown locations.
CEO of Capital A, the parent company of AirAsia, Tony Fernandes, says: "The digital era is now. In the VX4, we have identified what we believe will be the eVTOL aircraft of choice and we are thrilled to be the launch airline for the aircraft in Southeast Asia."
