Spanish airline Iberia is working with Samsung on NFC (Near Field Communication) initiatives to enhance the departure and arrival experience for passengers.
The IAG-owned airline plans to enable passengers with an NFC-enabled Samsung device to have the boarding pass delivered to their phones and stored on the SIM, pass through airport security and board flights.
The technology will also enable passengers to access its VIP lounges as well as relevant flight information from the carrier's Quick Service Points.
A statement says the planned developments will also help with 'fast luggage turnaround' such as bag check-in bags and presumably, the ability to track luggage using a tag and information on the boarding pass.
Iberia has not said when the technology will be in place except to say that it will shortly have the technology and will extend it to airports able to read the NFC cards.
Two years ago Toulouse Blagnac Airport announced an NFC trial with SITA, Orange and Blackberry enabling passengers to pass seamlessly through the airport.
More recently, SITA Lab has been involved in a test of iBeacons at an airport to see how the technology might work in reality along with some caveats.
