There’s no denying the impact of Google in travel, with several online travel companies recently revealing financial disruption due to changes in SEO.
In recent years, regulators have accused Google of “abusing its market dominance as a search engine” by promoting its own services and demoting competitors.
It’s an issue impacting many sectors, with travel especially feeling the Google sting.
At the 2019 Phocuswright Conference, Guillaume Teissonniere, the General Counsel for eDreams Odigeo, lays out the case against Google.

“This is a topic that everybody knows, but no one really wants to discuss because its strategically embarrassing,” says Teissonniere.
During the presentation, Teissonniere argues that Google is giving preferential placement to its own travel services and knocking organic search results from travel companies below the fold.
“Google is acting like an online vertex sucking all of the internet traffic,” says Teissonniere, with new policies and regulations creating a more level playing field.
