Indian OTA Yatra.com has acqui-hired tours specialist Travel-Logs and will use it at the basis for a new product range to be known as Metro X.
Metro X will be run by Travel-Logs co-founder Dhiresh Sharma. The idea behind Metro X is to offer tours and guided walks in India's biggest cities, themed around specific interests such as heritage, art and architecture.
It should go live next month with a range of itineraries in Mumbai, Travel-Logs' home city. Yatra's CEO Sharat Dhall said that the target market for Metro X will be people looking to explore their own city and that other cities will be added in time.
The Travel-Logs acqui-hire represents Yatra's first concrete move into tours and activities, although the site does have a "things to do" option covering events, restaurants and movie bookings. This channel is powered by buzzintown, a business it bought in 2012.
While the focus of the announcement is around Travel-Logs' city tours, it also works in the more traditional tours and activities arena, with wildlife trails and Himalayan tours part of its inventory.
Yatra's OTA rivals have been building up and talking up their own activities business. Cleartrip launched a dedicated activities app last August while Expedia India has also been vocal about its own activities channel.
